(Day 21)
Why?
Both Tim and Alan are experienced long distance motorcycle
riders. In the sport of long distance motorcycle riding riders are always
thinking of the next extreme right that might be approved by the Iron Butt
Organization. Our friend Jack Gustafson, was working on what he called the 18
Bay ride. This pushed Tim's button. Jack was not ready to do the ride, so Tim
ask permission from Jack to pursue it. Tim is a young 68 years old and had
promised his wife that he would not do anymore of these "crazy" rides without a
companion. Alan (a mere 60 years old) and Tim have been close friends for
several years but have never really ridden together. So why not make the first
ride together a whopper? Alan became Tim's companion.
While searching the Iron Butt Association web page to see what
similar rides might have been developed they found an Ultimate Circumnavigation
of North America which nobody had ever completed. It was decided that this ride
would be combined what had developed into a 35 Bay Ride and have what would
truly be the Ultimate Circumnavigation of North America.
You're still wondering why right? Mainly because we think we can
and very few others will every be able to accomplish what we are attempting.

Day 13, Saturday, May 28: UAF to North Pole, AK to Prudhoe Bay, AK to
North Pole, AK to UAF
1041 36 Hours 51 Minutes. Completing this day in less than 24 hours
will meet the criteria for the Haul Road 1000. This will likely be the most
challenging day of the trip. It will likely take very close to the the 24 hour
limit. The predicted time of 36 hours and 51 minutes is because much of this
road is gravel as noted below. Both Tim and Alan have ridden this road multiple
times and the conditions can vary dramatically. If conditions are not good, we
will spend the night in Deadhorse and abort the Haul Road 1000.
http://www.bopisolutions.com/35Bay/Day13.htm
- Required Stop: Prudhoe Bay, AK
- We will attempt to do this ride in less than 24 hours will
will be certified as the Haul Road 1000.
Most people have heard of the "Ice Road Truckers" road. This
road is formally known as the Dalton Highway and informally as the Haul Road
(it was made so trucks to hall stuff to the oil fields at Prudhoe Bay. The
road conditions on the road change very dramatically from day to day and
they have been paving some of it over the years (much of it is gravel of
some sort). I ask my friend Jack Gustafson how much of the road was paved
and got this reply.
- Pavement: From Fairbanks, AK to the start of the
Haul Road (Mile 0) is 78 Miles. There are some there are some frost
heaves about halfway that will let you know your suspension is working.
- Gravel: Minus 5 miles of broken pavement to Mile
37.
- Pavement: 13 miles of pavement to Mile 50. Gravel:
40 miles of gravel to Mile 90
- Pavement: 20 miles of old pavement with usual frost
heaves to Mile 110 (Beaver Slide)
- Pavement: 25 miles of good pavement to the Mile
115, Arctic Circle (A lot of people stop here; but the most difficult
part of the road is yet to come. Pavement: 15 miles of
old pavement to Mile 130.
- Pavement: 45 miles of decent pavement to Mile 175 (Coldfoot)
- So out of 253 miles, there is only 72 miles of gravel.
- Pavement: 22 miles of new pavement to Mile 199 Gravel: 208 miles of
gravel and 9 miles of pavement to Mile 415
From Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay is 493 miles of
which 312 is gravel. Since we will be making the return trip the same day, and
starting and ending at North Pole, we will be riding over 1000 miles of which
624 miles is gravel and will be attempting to do it in less than 24 hours.
- Leaving Prudhoe Bay will start the clock on the Bay to Bay
Ride (Prudhoe Bay, AK to Goose Bay, Labrador) which must me completed in 16
Days.
Day 14, Sunday, May 29: North Pole, AK to Tok, AK 189 miles 2 hours
54 minutes
http://www.bopisolutions.com/35Bay/Day14.htm
- Required Stops: None
- This is a short day. If road conditions are good we will have to ride 24
hours straight on Day 13 and will need a nap at the end of the Haul Road
1000. If road conditions are not good, we will spend the night on Day 13 in
Deadhorse, AK (Prudhoe Bay) which means we will have an additional 500+
miles on this day.
Day 15, Monday, May 30: Tok, AK to Chicken, AK to Little Gold Creek,
YT to Dawson City, YT to Eagle Plains, YT 457 Miles 10 Hours 27 Minutes
http://www.bopisolutions.com/35Bay/Day15.htm
- Required Stops: None
- This time is likely very optimistic. This road is gravel and can be very
difficult traveling.

YT, 429 Miles 9 Hours 35 Minutes
http://www.bopisolutions.com/35Bay/Day16.htm

Bay (Day 13).
It is unlikely that we will be able to complete the Bay to Bay Ride.
Our current schedule is to complete the ride at the end of day 29. If we
attempt the Haul Road 1000 we will be long by about 1/2 Day.
Day 30-31, Tuesday-Wednesday, June 14-15: Goose Bay, Labrador to

http://www.bopisolutions.com/35Bay/Day30.htm
- Required Stops: St. John's Bay (Cape Spear), Newfoundland
- For almost its entire length, the Trans Labrador Highway runs through
dense wilderness, with absolutely no roadside services between communities.
The Trans Labrador Highway has been under construction for several years. It
appears that Phase 3 is now open. If so we will be traveling by road. If
not, we will take a ferry from Goose Bay to Cartwright. From Cartwright we
will travel by road to Blanc Sablon where we will take a ferry to St. Barbie
Newfoundland.
- This Completes the Ultimate Canadian Insanity. We have until
Day 36 to complete so this should not be an issue.

needs to be completed by Day 32.
There are no time pressures for the balance of the ride.
